Surrogacy Ethical Issues Paper - N332

Obstetrics Ethical Issues Paper

NURS 332 – The Growing Family

Purpose of the Assignment

To examine a controversial or politically or publicly debated women’s health, obstetric or neonatal issue and present both sides equally.

Student Approach to Assignment

This assignment allowed me to examine an ethical issue surrounding the concept of obstetrics faced by an immense number of mothers and families each year.  By engaging with this activity, I learned more regarding the process of surrogacy, while also examining additional nuances of surrogacy that I was unkeen on.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio

I decided to include this assignment in my portfolio because it highlights my understanding and awareness of surrogacy in relation to nursing.  Additionally, I am able to express my holistic understanding of this concept for the various individuals and groups who stake a claim in this ethical controversy.

Professionalism

  • Understands the effect of legal and regulatory processes on nursing practice and health care delivery, as well as limits to one’s own scope of practice

    • In this work, I discuss the implications of surrogacy in relation to the global, national, and local norms.  Additionally, I recognize the exploitation potential associated with surrogacy while also relaying the positives for each group involved.  Ultimately, I found these understandings to govern political processes and regulations on levels from local to global realms.  As a nurse, I understand that holistic care must be given to assure that patients are given ample information regarding their situation and are able to make the best choice for themselves.  Though nurses may recognize avenues to easily connect a child to another family, it is imperative that all healthcare parties be involved to assure that safety of the mother and baby is the pinnacle of importance.
